When reality bites, design crumbles: We see the translucent polycarbonate awnings everywhere in Malaysia. They are not the idea of beauty for architects, yet we see them all over our buildings. In this case, the awning provide post design solution to combat 'tempias' or driving rain in a mosque. Yet on this particular day, where there's a sudden downpour during friday congregational prayer, they are of little help. Puddles quickly formed on the verandahs and corridors where worshipper has to abandon their praying spots. Can this problem be tackled in the design stage? so that..1, it eliminate the problem, 2. it does not compromise the aesthetic created by the designer, hence disrupting a possible pleasant user experience.
